Tillon, Charles
(1897-1993)
   political figure
   Born in Rennes, Charles Tillon was the organizer with André marty of the mutiny in 1919 of the French fleet in the Black Sea. Amnestied in 1922, he joined the French communist party the same year and later became a member of its Central Committee (1931) and a deputy (1936-40). During the Spanish civil war, he served as a volunteer in the International Brigade and, in World War II,he was part of the clandestine secretariat of the Communist Party. He took the lead in the organization of the armed resistance forces, the Francs-Tireurs and the French Partisans (1942-44). Minister of air in the cabinet of General charles de gaulle (1944), he was excluded from the leadership of the Communist Party in 1952 because of "fractional politics," then from the party itself in 1970.
